Merzouga is the gateway to the Sahara Desert, the edge of Erg Chebbi, and the home to the high dunes and fine orange sand people often associate with the Sahara Desert. Bring your camera for spectacular sunrise and sunset shots in the dunes.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Errachidia to Merzouga

Depart from Errachidia and drive toward Merzouga. Stop at viewpoints to admire the palm groves and the Ziz River. Explore the charming village of Aoufous and its kasbah.  Enjoy a meal at a local restaurant in Merzouga. In the afternoon.  Begin a camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes and find a great spot to watch the sunset over the dunes.  Arrive at a desert camp for dinner and overnight under the stars.
 

Day 2: Explore Merzouga

Enjoy a traditional breakfast at the camp. Try sandboarding on the dunes. Learn about the Berber culture by visiting local nomadic families. Have lunch back at the camp or in a local village. In the afternoon.  Explore the desert in a 4x4 vehicle, visiting the dunes and the oasis. Khamlia Village and experience Gnaoua music and dance with locals. Return to the camp for dinner and enjoy a cultural evening with music and stories around the fire.
 

Day 3: Merzouga to Errachidia

Depart the desert camp after breakfast. Visit the traditional market in Rissani and see local crafts.  Either stop for lunch in Rissani or on the way back to Errachidia.  Explore Errachidia, visit local sites, or relax. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.


Optional Activities:

  • Visit Todra Gorge: If you have extra time, consider a detour to the stunning Todra Gorge before heading to Merzouga.
