Detailed Itinerary

Day 1:  Casablanca - Rabat

The journey begins when we meet you at the airport or at the hotel where you are

staying in Casablanca and drive you to visit the Hassan II mosque, second in size only to the mosque in Mecca! From there we will continue to Rabat, the capital of Morocco, to see the Hassan II tower, the minaret of an incomplete mosque from the 12th century. We will also tour the Oudaya Kasbah, a beautiful spot with tranquil gardens, moorish architecture, and extensive history dating back to the 12th

century. After that we will check into the riad in the heart of the medina for a good night’s rest.

Day 2:   Rabat - Meknes - Volubilis - Rif Mountains - Fes

In the morning we will drive to Meknes, another imperial city. We will see Bab

Monsour, a huge but elegantly-decorated gate welcoming visitors to the old part of

the city. We will also see Sahrij Souani, a large reservoir built by Ismail Moulay in the

17th century to ensure that the kasbah would have enough water in times of siege

or drought. We will also visit the Moulay Ismail mausoleum, built for one of

Morocco’s longest-ruling sultans. After lunch, we will drive to Volubilis to explore

the Roman ruins which have survived for thousands of years and are a UNESCO

World Heritage Site. From there we will drive over the Rif mountains to Fes where

we will find our hotel for the night.

Day 3: Fes

Today will be devoted to exploring Fes with a local guide. We will start at the Royal Palace Gate and ensure that you see the most important cultural and historic sites including the medina, the souks, Al Karaouine University, the tanneries, and Medersa el-Attarine. After lunch you will also see a ceramic factory and enjoy a panoramic view of the city. Then we will return to the hotel.

Day 4: Fes - Ifrane - Azrou - Midelt

After breakfast we will drive toward the beautiful village of Ifrane, the “Switzerland of Morocco,” located in the MIddle Atlas mountains. We will continue on to the Berber village of Azrou which is home to a cedar forest. Within that forest lives the world-famous, and friendly Barbary macaques. If luck is with you, you may see them. We will continue along the Ziz Gorges and through Tizi n Talghamt pass to the city of Midelt where we will stay for the night. The altitude of this middle Atlas town makes it perfect for many kinds of agriculture, but especially apples which is why there is an apple statue in the middle of town. We will spend the night here in Midelt.

Day 5:  Midelt - Errachidia - Erfoud - Rissani - Merzouga

We will travel down and out of the mountains through the towns of

Errachidia and Erfoud and Rissani, along the river of date palms which line the Ziz

Valley, to Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara. You will see the trees give way to

shrubs and the mountains give way to flatlands and sand dunes. Here we will enjoy

some mint tea then check into the hotel.

Day 6: Merzouga - Sahara

After breakfast, we will take a trip to Khamlia village to see a performance of Gnawa

music. From there we can visit a seasonal lake which, when it has water, attracts many varieties of migrating birds. We could also shop for some Berber handcrafts if you like. In the afternoon we will mount camels, with the guidance of an

experienced camel man, and trek to the heart of the dunes to the campsite where you will enjoy dinner and overnight accommodations. There will be live music around a campfire, and time to gaze at the stars before you sleep.

Day 7:  Merzouga - Rissani - Tinghir - Todra Gorge - Dades Valley

It will be an early morning start so you can see a gorgeous sunrise over the

dunes of the Sahara. Then we’ll trek out of the desert and back to town before

driving through towns like Rissani, Tinghir, and the Todra Gorge. Here you can walk

along the Todra River which carved the gorge from the mountains and admire

the high, narrow walls of the canyon. Sometimes you can even see climbers

attempting to scale the walls! After lunch we will drive on toward Dades Valley, the

home of one of the most interesting mountain terrains - Monkey Toes. We will

spend the night in a hotel here.

Day 8: Dades Valley - Ouarzazate - Ait Ben Haddou - High Atlas Mountains - Marrakech

After an early breakfast we will drive to Ouarzazate, over the High Atlas Mountains.

On the way we will stop at another UNESCO World Heritage site - the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. Centuries ago this was an important stop for camel caravans travelling across the Sahara to and from Morocco. Today it is more often the background of

movies like Gladiator or Game of Thrones. After lunch we will drive over the High Atlas Mountains to Marrakech where we will stay in a riad for the night.

Day 9: Marrakech

You will enjoy a private, guided tour of the imperial Red City, Marrakech today. The long list of places to see include the Koutoubia Mosque, Majorelle Gardens, the 16th century Saadian Tombs, and the 19th Century Bahia Palace. After lunch there is free time so you can tour the medina and souks around Jemaa el-Fna square. Maybe you are shopping for yourself or picking up some gifts to take home, you will be impressed with the quality of Moroccan craftsmen. Later, if you like, you can watch the square fill with snake charmers, story tellers, and families as the night wears on. We will spend another night in the riad.

Day10: Airport

Today we will take you to the airport in Marrakech or Casablanca (let us

know which one is best for you!) in time to catch your flight.

We wish you fond memories of your trip to Morocco!
