Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Casablanca - Marrakech
We can’t wait to meet you at the airport when you arrive.
From there we will spend a little time exploring Casablanca. We will visit the
Hassan II Mosque, the beach area, and walk around the city just a bit before we
depart for Marrakech where we will spend the night in a local riad.
Day 2: Marrakech
After a hearty breakfast on the second day, you will have a private guided tour of Marrakech, through the medina, with a local guide who knows all the best places to see including the souks, the Koutoubia Mosque, Ali Ben Youssef Qur’anic School, the Menara, Bahia Palace, Majorelle Gardens, the Saadian Tombs, and any other secret places the guide knows. As the day ends and the main square fills, you can enjoy the sights and sounds of Jemaa el Fna, the nightly gathering that is a must-see. After that, we will return to the riad for some much-needed sleep.
Day 3: Marrakech - High Atlas Mountains - Ait Ben Haddou - Dades Valley
We’ll travel up into the High Atlas Mountains on the third day, through the Tizi
n’Tichka pass, admiring the incredible scenery created by the mountains and the
Berber villages among them. Our route will take us to the kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou.
You might recognize it from movies like Gladiator or Game of Thrones. Before
becoming “famous,” it was an important stop for camel caravans travelling from the
deep Sahara to Morocco, thus earning its spot as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
After a tour, we’ll continue on to Dades Gorge where we will have dinner and stay in a riad or hotel for the night.
Day 4: Dades Gorge - Todra Gorge - Erfoud - Rissani - Merzouga
We’ll leave Dades Gorge and drive to Todra Gorge, one of the deepest and most impressive canyons you will ever see. We’ll walk along the river that helped carve the gorge and,
with luck, see some ambitious climbers trying to scale the face of the rocks. Then we’ll continue on toward the cities of Erfoud and Rissani until we arrive in Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara, situated in the Erg Chebbi area of the desert. You’ll notice the scenery change from mountainous to flat to desert sands by the end of the day. We will have dinner and stay in a hotel for the night.
Day 5: Merzouga
Today will be devoted to exploring the desert. We will visit the village of Khamlia
to hear a performance of Gnawa music, then drive out into the desert for tea with a
nomadic Berber family. We’ll return to the hotel in time to prepare for a camel trek
into the desert to reach our campsite for the night, stopping to admire the sunset.
We will have dinner, then enjoy some music around the campfire before getting
some rest.
Day 6: Merzouga - Ziz Valley - Midelt - Ifrane - Fes
It will be an early morning on the sixth day so we can see the sun rise over the dunes. Then we will trek back out of the desert to the hotel, collect your things, and begin our drive toward Fes. We will drive along Ziz Valley and its seemingly unending river of date palm trees, into the Middle Atlas mountains to the town of Midelt. After lunch in this beautiful
agricultural area we will drive on to Ifrane, the “Switzerland of Morocco,” then continue on to Fes where we will spend the night.
Day 7: Fes
We will spend our last day together exploring the city of Fes with a private guide.
The medina in Fes, also a UNESCO World Heritage site, is beautiful but it can also
be disorienting to those less familiar with it. After seeing that and several other sites
of interest - including the world-famous tanneries - you will relax on a terrace
overlooking the tanneries for some pictures. When we have seen all there is
to see in Fes, we will return to your hotel and wish you fond memories of your trip
to Morocco.
